| Task Force Recommends Newborn Hearing Screening The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent panel of experts in prevention and primary care, issued a recommendation for all newborns to be screened for hearing loss. The recommendation, published in the July issue of Pediatrics, states that the earlier a hearing loss is found and treated, the better the child's chances for positive outcomes later in life, such as stronger language skills. | AG Bell Welcomes New Director of Development On July 7, Howard Silberstein joined the AG Bell staff as the new Director of Development. Howard will oversee AG Bell's development department, chapters, membership and fundraising efforts, including advertising, corporate sponsorships and exhibits.
Howard has more than 25 years of experience as a development executive with organizations such as Rebuild Together, Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and Children's Miracle Network. "Helping children and families get the services they need and be a part of the greater solution to the issues that impact them on a daily basis has been my personal and professional mission," said Howard. AG Bell Announces President-Elect for 2008-2010 By a unanimous decision, the AG Bell Board of Directors has elected board member and Professional Section Chair Kathleen Treni as its new president-elect for 2008-2010. Kathleen has been a member of AG Bell since 1973. Kathleen was born deaf and was educated in public schools. "For many years, Kathleen has demonstrated tremendous leadership on the board, particularly throughout the recent transition at AG Bell and the adoption of a new governance structure," said AG Bell President Karen Youdelman. "Kathleen's professional commitment to the educational development of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as her role as a mentor to those with hearing loss, makes her an outstanding selection as a future president of AG Bell."
